Incident – Newbiggin and Blyth lifeboat volunteers were called away from training today to investigate a submerged car.
The call came in from Humber coastguard during the morning after they had received reports of a submerged car in the sea at Cambois but there was concerns there may be someone inside it.
Newbiggin’s Atlantic 85 B class lifeboat and Blyth’s D Class inshore lifeboat were quickly on scene and found the car in shallow water. Newbiggin Lifeboat volunteer Peter Leslie was tasked to check out the car and swam from the lifeboat to the beach. After carrying out a thorough reconnaissance he ascertained that nobody was trapped inside.
With the incident closed for the lifeboats the matter was handed over to the shore side emergency services and the lifeboat returned to training.
Blyth All Weather lifeboat also attended the scene and stood by.
